Event: “The Church & Big Society” - Transform Southwark Reception

Southwark for Jesus, in partnership with Southwark Council, would like to warmly invite you to our next Transform Southwark Reception at the Town Hall on Monday March 28th March 2011. Refreshments will be served from 6.30pm and the meeting will start at 7.00pm.

Big Society has been a much publicised and often misunderstood slogan underpinning the current government’s vision of a smaller state and greater local involvement of voluntary groups in their communities. This event is an opportunity to learn about the opportunities presented by Big Society, and to be inspired as we explore a biblical vision of transformation through united prayer and action.

Abdul Mohammed, Labour councillor and cabinet member for Equalities and Community Engagement who has lead responsibility within the London Borough of Southwark, will be helping us to understand the Big Society from the Council’s perspective and we are also pleased that Simon Thomas will be speaking on a Biblical Response to the Big Society. We aim to critique the concept and frame some possible responses for Southwark churches.

There will be time for dialogue, questions and answers with both speakers. We will also be hearing about plans for Pentecost and for the Olympics, and other events scheduled for this summer.

There will also be an opportunity for churches and community projects to exhibit community action initiatives. Please let us know on your booking form whether you would like to profile your initiative in the exhibition area adjacent to the mayor’s parlour prior to the meeting.

Please can you display the enclosed posters and fliers on your notice board/table and include the event in your church bulletins and notices and ask your members to register by email to admin@southwarkforjesus.org.uk.
